Yet another Unmaintained Free Software update:
Many other things in the wiki are currently undergoing a long-overdue update and fixing phase. I plan to upgrade the MediaWiki installation we're using, and some new MediaWiki extensions will be added, too.
Oh, and I created and installed a nice favicon for the site, based on the project logo. If you ever wondered how those things are created, here's one possibility:
apt-get install icoutils
icotool -c foo16x16.png foo32x32.png > favicon.ico
favicon.icofile in your DocumentRoot. Done.
I'm sure there are other and better ways to do it, but this was the first I came up with after a quick
apt-cache search favicon.
Especially a2ps has often been very useful to me, so I instantly added it to the Unmaintained Free Software wiki (the other two will follow soon).
It would be nice if someone could take over these packages, fix some bugs, and generally keep them in shape. I don't like seeing such useful programs die.
In addition, I got motivated to work on it again; I had neglected the wiki for quite a while, partly because I was busy with tons of other projects (which I always am, so I guess that doesn't count), and partly also because it was a one-man project for a long time. Even after being mentioned on Slashdot, Newsforge and a bunch of other sites it never reached a state of halfway constant contributions from other people. But, it somehow survived while one or two similar projects I was aware of died away.
As it's the only project of its kind which exists at the moment (to the best of my knowledge) and I really think it's a worthwhile cause, I'll continue searching and adding more projects , in the hope that some interested programmers take over maintainance of one or the other... Any help and contributions are of course very welcome!
Joey: As for Xgalaga, it was not yet re-added after I switched from a custom-made CMS to a wiki, but it's there now. That'll hopefully increase it's chances to find a new maintainer ;)
Yeah, it's that time of the year (again)...
Unmaintained Free Software is a wiki which collects and categorizes orphaned Free Software projects, in order to find new maintainers for the projects — just in case you didn't know or guess that already ;-)
Well, the site was down for weeks (again), hosting support was non-responsive, slow and not very helpful (again), so I moved the domain to another, more pricey server (again), I waited for the domain transfer for a small eternity (again), and finally installed backups and put the site up (again) today.
Email is not working yet on the new server, I still need to setup Postfix or something. But other than that everything should work fine, please report any issues you notice. Oh, and I plan for some more neat (technical) stuff soonish, e.g. https/SSL support and a properly signed certificate thanks to CAcert (got me some assurance points at 22C3, thanks to everybody who assured me!).
Shameless plug: If you happen to know of any unmaintained project, just add it (it's a wiki). If you have too much time on your hands, go ahead and adopt one of the orphaned projects and eternal fame will be yours!
